Calgary Jewellery’s “Watches, Whisky and Wagons” for BB4CK

At Calgary Jewellery’s second annual charity event, “Watches Whisky and Wagons,” we caught up with Jonathan Florence, one of the main organizers of the event. It was hosted at Guild Restaurant, the steakhouse in Calgary that offers “the finest traditions of butchery, cookery, and bar-keeping.” The two-floor restaurant served as the stage for the event, organized for Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK).

BB4CK is a charity focused on providing free and healthy lunches for kids. In its partnership with Calgary schools, the charity supports over 4000 children a day who would otherwise go hungry. The choice of charity came from the team at Whisky Wisemen YYC, the Calgary chapter of the whisky society that began in Vancouver. Through their love of whisky, the organization has donated over $67,000 to charities in their chapter cities of Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Miami, and the Cayman Islands.

The primary sponsor of the event was Oris, the Swiss wristwatch company from 1904, that creates gorgeous mechanical timepieces. Mark and VJ from the company were both at the event, and they were instrumental in making it happen. They brought along several Oris watches to showcase, each an intricate work of mechanical art.

National Bank returned to sponsor the event again this year, after being impressed at the high turnout, the sustainability of this fundraiser, and the positive impact it has on Calgary. Ferrari, Maserati, Rolls-Royce, and Alfa Romeo, all graced the floor with beautiful machines that are works of art in their own right, and also served as sponsors for the evening.

Jonathan of Calgary Jewellery conceived of “Watches, Whisky and Wagons” as an after-party to the Stampede, with a focus on charity and giving back to the community. He is a third generation jeweller, following in the footsteps of his father and his grandfather, who opened the business in 1955. The company prides itself on their dedication to customer service and a well-loved and long-time staff, who they’d like to recognize for their amazing commitment and hard work.

Before joining Calgary Jewellery, Jonathan was an investment banker, giving him an excellent foundation in work ethic and finance. In 2014, his dad asked if he wanted to start at Jewellery, and he jumped in. He both runs the business and designs the jewellery, but finds the love of the job in connecting with clients in person. For many people, jewellery is not only an expensive purchase, but an emotional one, and Jonathan takes joy in the fact that he can help make people happy.

Last year, this event raised just over $16,000 for charity and was such a success that they decided to do it again. This year, “Watches, Whisky and Wagons” raised over $24,000 and hosted over 250 guests! It was a fantastic event, organized and sponsored by a great group of people, and we would like to thank them for inviting us along to photograph it!
